アガットは長い間日本に興味を持っていて、日本にすでに何度も訪れた事がありますが、九州、特に別府に来たのは今回が初めてです。彼女は別府で初めて温泉文化に触れました。アガットは2011年から風景をテーマにして作品を作り出してきました。彼女は別府の中でも有名な鉄輪を訪れた時、特に自然の温泉から立ちのぼる湯気に非常に興味を持っていました。彼女にとってそれらの風景は叙情的に見えたようです。

Agathe has been interested in Japan since many years, she came to Japan several times already. But this time was the first time in Kyushu and particularly in Beppu. She experienced onsen for the first time here. Agathe has been working on the landscape theme since 2011 and when she visited the famous Kannawa district she has been particularly interested in the steam rising in the sky above the natural hot springs. They seemed very poetic and looked like landscape to her.

作品を制作するにあたり屋内のスタジオと屋外の展示の違いについてアガットは周期的にアイディアの前進と後退を繰り返しました。屋外で絵画や光を展示をする時、その場所を修正することを好まず、ありのままの姿を映し出そうと試行錯誤したのです。

For a long time now, there has been a regular back and forth in Agathe's practice between works she does in the studio and outdoor installations. When Agathe works on an outdoor installation with paint or light, she doesn't want to modify the reality of the site, she deals with it as it is. 　

アガットは別府でいくつかのアイディアを模索しました。それらのいくつかは非常に冒険的、またいくつかは直接壁に絵画を描くのではなく別の媒体に絵を描いて展示するというアイディアでした。彼女にとって場所の選択はとても難しく重要な課題でした。また、彼女は別府市の歴史、特徴さらに別府を取り巻く自然について学びを深めようとしました。　

In Beppu, for her project, Agathe explored several ideas, some were very ambitious, some were using other medium than paint on walls. The choice of the location was crucial to her. She also tried to learn more about Beppu city, about the history, the characteristics and the nature around Beppu.

何度も繰り返されたブレインストーミングはコンセプトの選定や、どのような計画を遂行するべきか決めるのに欠かせないものでした。

青い色はアガットの最近の作品を形作る上で非常に重要な役割を果たしてきました。彼女はこの青い色が全体的に別府の環境や温泉文化に馴染んでいると感じました。

Several brainstormings were necessary to decide which project and concept will be done and the right location for it. Blue colour has also been very present in Agathe's latest body of work. Somehow she felt that this colour was totally in tune with Beppu's environment and the onsen culture.

滞在期間も終盤になって彼女はようやく構想を実現化することができました。その展示はまるで"窓"のように"開けた考え方"で、その場所を訪れた誰にでも自分だけの価値観を見つけるきっかけを与えてくれます。また、彼女の展示は窓そのもののように新しいアイディアや想像力をかきたてるでしょう。

At the end of the residency she will finally realize her project. The installation that she will make will be like a window, an 'open perspective', that everyone will be able to perceive with his own point of view. It will be like a window on new ideas and imagination.
