アーティスト・イン・レジデンス事業である「KASHIMA(カシマ)」は、別府の温泉文化の中に息づく湯治のための宿泊形態「貸間」から名付けられ、2008年より継続開催しています。本プログラムは別府での滞在制作を支援し、成果発表展の機会をアーティストに提供する事で、新進芸術家の育成と芸術文化振興を目的としています。
今回は「spacetime-時空-」をテーマに、スロベニアとセルビアより2組のアーティストを招聘しました。スロベニアのアーティスト、マテー・アンドラス・ヴォグリンキクの滞在成果発表展を開催いたします。

別府を訪れ、町をリサーチするなかで彼が見つけたのは、いまは閉ざされ、使われなくなった共同温泉でした。マテーの目には、古く、現在は捨て置かれたようなこの場所が、物体として美しいものにうつりました。それは、別府の西法寺エリアという様々な歴史が重なる時空と、アーティストの生きる時空が交差した場所です。彼がこの場所にどのように関わり、作品を制作したのか、ぜひ確かめてください。

また、今回マテーが別府に数多く存在するトタンの壁や樋からインスピレーションを受けて制作した作品の展示も期間限定で開催します。

Matej Andraz Vogrincic stayed two months in Beppu, as part of the KASHIMA BEPPU ARTIST IN RESIDENCE on the theme "Space Time". He created new artworks that are an invitation to travel into the world of imagination.
Visiting Beppu, he discovered an abandoned onsen that inspired him the artwork: "The Rope".
In the onsen Matej noticed the taps and asked himself what could came out from there. Strange but bright images came to his mind, like images of a movie or like a cartoon.
Furthermore, he created a challenging artwork by experimenting the bamboo craft technique.

The space is the same, but not exactly the same. Come to see by yourself!

マテー・アンドラス・ヴォグリンキク (Matej Andraz Vogrincic)


1970年生スロヴェニア リュブリャナ生まれ。1990年代初めから、都市や自然環境の中でサイトスペシフィックな作品制作を行なう。いたって平凡な素材で、なんでもないような場、人々に見過ごされていた場を埋めつくすという方法を用い、それぞれの土地の地域性や、伝統、歴史に特有な作品を制作し、国際的な評価を得てきた。地域のコミュニティとの直接的なやりとりから作品制作を行なう。これまでに作品を発表したのは主に、1999年ヴェニスビエンナーレ、2006年リヴァプールビエンナーレ、2010年中国上海万国博覧会でのスロヴェニアパヴィリオンなどがある。
(b.1970, Ljubljana, Slovenia) Matej Andraz Vogrincic has been creating site-specific work in urban and natural environments since the early 1990s. He has built an international reputation by creating installations specific to local places, traditions, and histories - filling the most ordinary or neglected places with even more ordinary objects. He regularly relies upon a direct connection with the local community to help him create his projects. He presented notably artwork for the Venice Biennale in 1999, a commissioned work for the 4th Liverpool Biennial in England in 2006, artwork for the Slovenian pavillon in Shangai World Expo 2010.
