「Higugma(Breath. 息)」は、別府現代芸術フェスティバル2009「混浴温泉世界」の出品作品として、ラニ・マエストロによって制作された、 20枚のドローイングによって 構成されたインスタレーション作品です。現在10点が別府に残り、毎年7月から12月までの6ヶ月間に公開し、多くの方にご鑑賞いただける期間としており ます。

In 2009, Lani Maestro created an installation that incorporated a series of twenty drawings, entitled 「Higugma (Breath. 息)」 during the Beppu Contemporary Art Festival 2009, "Mixed Bathing World". Today, we have the chance to present an exhibition of ten of the drawings that we will keep showing for six months every year from July to December.


ラ ニ・マエストロは、制作のためにplatform05に滞在し、この場で日本の伝統的な古民家がもつ独特の静けさや穏やかさに触れ、日本家屋に用いられる 材料で作品を制作することを着想しました。そこで、platform05の長屋を建てた職人に作品の一部となる木製フレームの制作を依頼し、ドローイング には障子紙を使用しました。彼女はplatform05に滞在した感想を「建物がまるで人間のように感じられ、なにかの体内にいるような気がした」と語っ ていました。この場所で生まれたドローイングには、彼女の育ての母がしゃべっていたというタガログ語で詩的な言葉が綴られ、ろうそくの煤で彼女の感情の揺 らめきが描かれています。

When Lani Maestro conceived of the installation, she deeply immersed herself in the minka and its quiet and peaceful atmosphere. The place gave her the inspiration to realize an artwork that was strongly connected to this old traditional Japanese house. As a reference to the architecture and its philosophical traditions, the drawings have been made with the same materials that constitute the traditional Japanese dwelling. Lani Maestro collaborated with traditional craftsmen, local artisans who built these houses to make the wooden frames for the artworks and she used the same paper (shoji) employed for the sliding doors. Spending a long time in the house to absorb the space, like a meditation, she consecrated her time on making these drawings, incorporating lines of poetic words in Tagalog, her mother tongue (Philippine).
