As an incredible centre for geothermal activity, Beppu attracted Ilana Halperin, an American artist, who decided to come to the city to develop a research for a three weeks residency.

Ilana Halperin's practice is halfway between the art's field and the geo-science's field. 

In Kannawa and Myouban areas she made observations, took photo and video recordings and wrote sketches. Then, she started initiating experiments in the hot-spring areas where she put wooden and bamboo sculptures (made in Beppu!) to obtain a mineral formation on the sculptures.

During this talk event, Ilana Halperin will talk about this experience in Beppu!

Besides the talk, we will hold a mini laboratory to show photos or the research and to discover the results of the first experiments!

Ilana Halperin, born in 1973 in New York, lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland. Her work has featured in solo exhibitions worldwide including National Museum of Scotland, Berlin Medical History Museum and Artists Space in New York. She has received numerous awards including a British Council Darwin Now Award and the Alchemy Fellowship, Manchester Museum. She is the Artist-Curator of geology for The Music Hall, a new museum in Shrewsbury, the birthplace of Charles Darwin. Schering Foundation (Berlin) have recently published a monograph of her work entitled New Landmass.
