BEPPU PROJECT

We, BEPPU PROJECT, are currently supporting 'Geologic Intimacy (Yu no Hana)', an art-science project by Scotland-based American artist Ilana Halperin. Our main role is providing on-site reports in Beppu throughout the development period. This is the fourth progress photo report.

The project was featured in the evening issue of the Oita Godo Shimbun newspaper on 4th April (by Hiroko Sato).

Project Title: 'Geologic Intimacy (Yu no Hana)'

The colour of the objects installed under Yumetake gets much darker.

For this time's check, we also had the project curator Naoko Mabon with us - who came to Beppu all the way from Scotland. Naoko's websitewww.wagonart.org

These are the objects placed under the spring stream near the Gensen pipes. The deposit seems still soft although there is a possibility that it will harden when it is dried out naturally. After a discussion with Mr Tanaka from Hyotan Onsen, we have decided to continue to have them in the water.

Ryokan Mikasaya

The objects at Mikasaya keep the remaining yellow-ocher minerals, which seemed to have dissolved at the last check, as interesting textures.

Yanagiya

These used to be ceramic objects in pure white, but have now turned to be like this! The matt texture of the brown mineral looks beautiful.

The sandstone object is gradually gaining a matt texture. It almost feels like we are growing sculptures with a natural phenomenon itself!

The minerals on other objects seem still soft but we will try to keep them into the spring water and see.

Sunahara Onsen
At Sunahara Onsen, since they had a deep pipe cleaning recently, there is no excess water coming out from the tank anymore...

P4107207_EMAIL.JPG
Therefore, we hastily spoke to Ilana and Mr Ono, the Sunahara Onsen owner. We then have decided to take these two objects out now to save the delicate white patterns developed on their surfaces so far, and as an experiment, to put the 'pipe' looking thin object into the Gensen spring water in the tank and see what would happen.

Ono-san helped us to hang the object in the water with a metal wire. The water is super clear as the mineral content is so rich but somehow the bottom seems to be covered in white so we asked Ono-san to hang it touching the bottom as we wonder whether the bottom of the tank could develop some white minerals... Let's see how it would be turned out at the next sculpture check in June!

These objects have been smoked by the direct steam from the Gensen pipes. We can see more red colour in them now. The sandstone object (on the right) has different textures on each side.

Two more photo reports to go now! The next check is scheduled in June.
